The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
