Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for several hours when dozens of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and near the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Parallel situations in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
